The future of artificial turf

In traditional artificial turf, players often compromise on feel, performance, or sustainability. Pure PT was developed to change that — designed from the ground up to improve both the player experience and the environmental footprint.

We asked Dr. Colin Young, TenCate’s Global Director of R&D, to answer some key questions about what makes Pure PT different and why it’s setting the standard for next-generation turf.

Q&A

Yes. It meets FIFA Quality and Quality Pro standards when tested with an appropriate system design and a range of options available. It also complies with EN 15330-1.

Pure PT provides natural-like performance that closely resembles high-quality natural grass. This includes traction, comfort, hardness, and ball interactions. These qualities remain consistent throughout the year, regardless of wear or weather conditions.

Absolutely. Pure PT offers reliable footing, natural ball response, and player comfort, all essential for dynamic sports like field hockey, korfball, handball, and more. It is designed to support high-intensity performance while remaining safe and comfortable in all weather conditions. There are different versions of Pure PT tailored to the needs of various sports and activities, from elite training to daily recreation. It’s also perfect for shared spaces like school fields and community pitches, where it efficiently handles football, PE lessons, informal games, and casual play.

Yes. With the appropriate shockpad configuration, PurePT meets player safety requirements for rugby in terms of CFH / HIC. However, it cannot be certified to Regulation 22 due to the 50 mm pile height restriction. So, in short, it can be used for rugby training but is not permitted for games and matches that require Regulation 22 from World Rugby. But watch this space for a future development, coming soon!

Yes. Professional and grassroots players worldwide participated in PurePT’s testing to ensure realism and comfort. It is the most tested product in TenCate’s history, and possibly in the turf market ever.

While the turf may have a higher price per square meter, the overall costs balance out quickly. Installation is easier, quicker, and requires less transportation, with no need for infill, sand, or ballast. In the long run, maintenance stays low, the field’s lifespan extends by 30%, and recycling at the end of its life is more straightforward and affordable. Consequently, the total ownership cost is considerably reduced.

Longer life span, No infill replacement, lower brushing frequency, reduced cleaning, and faster installation reduce ongoing operational costs.

Pure PT demands very little upkeep—just occasional brushing and surface cleaning. You don’t need to level, top up, or decompact infill.

System Design and Installation

While Pure PT is designed as a true non-filled turf system, we offer an optional BS-L; a minimal, natural-material infill applied solely to meet current certification standards. This low-volume layer does not affect play characteristics, surface behavior, or player interaction in any significant way. Its purpose is to support regulatory compliance, ensuring that our systems remain eligible for certification and competitive bids if needed. Importantly, this infill is applied with no significant change to the installation process, no impact on durability, and no compromise to our core design philosophy.

Pure PT can be installed directly on standard bases commonly used for turf systems, including both loose stone aggregates and rigid engineered bases. Shockpad can be used with any Pure PT system depending on preference. For some sports like rugby, a shockpad is required.

Yes, in many cases, existing bases are used subject to condition assessment.

Yes. Pure PT uses optimized yarn height and density to eliminate the need for infill while maintaining sport-specific performance. The yarn density is significantly higher than traditional turf systems. A lot of research has gone into developing the yarns specifically for Pure PT.

Performance

Yes. The Pure PT system undergoes testing for CFH, Gmax, shock absorption, energy restitution, and rotational resistance, along with all other relevant tests to meet European Sport Standards, International Sports Federation criteria, and many other norms worldwide.

Pure PT remains stable across a wide range of temperatures and can be combined with cooling technology if needed in hotter regions or supported by snow clearing. Pure PT fields have been installed in very cold winter climates and are used in extreme cold conditions following snow clearance, which is much easier than sand and rubber systems that hold water and freeze. It has also been installed in very hot climates and experiences much lower heat stress and peak temperatures compared to rubber-filled turf.

It is designed for at least 12 years of use depending on intensity and location, with consistent performance throughout. This is backed by TenCate’s warranty. We estimate a 50% longer lifespan than legacy rubber-filled turf systems. We recently went past 500,000 LISport cycles with minimal yarn damage and degradation.

Yes. It remains playable and safe in all conditions. No infill means no hardening in frost or compaction in heat. Unlike infill-based fields, Pure PT doesn’t freeze into a hard surface or shift under stress. It provides stable, safe performance all year round.

Yes. Pure PT uses optimized yarn height and density to eliminate the need for infill while maintaining sport-specific performance. The yarn density is significantly higher than traditional turf systems. A lot of research has gone into developing the yarns specifically for Pure PT.

Pure PT is designed to provide balanced rotational traction and shock absorption, promoting safety and agility without excessive grip. It has been thoroughly tested by players across all skill levels and various sports.

Yes. Extensive biomechanical testing on Pure PT was used to optimize energy return, surface hardness, foot stability, and surface friction.

Environment

Pure PT is built for sustainability from the start. No infill means no microplastics, less maintenance, and reduced wear. It’s much lighter than traditional turf, cutting transport and CO₂ emissions dramatically. And with its single-polymer design, Pure PT is fully recyclable at end-of-life. Less material, less impact, less waste. More play.

Yes, Pure PT is easier to recycle than traditional infilled turf. There’s no need to separate sand or rubber, which simplifies the process (as no separation is needed). Its high PE content provides more flexible end-of-life options compared to older systems. We’re also working on ways to further improve recyclability in the near term, introducing our innovative ONE-DNA™ version. That version will enable full closed-loop recovery, but in the meantime, non-infill systems like Pure PT already make significant progress toward better recycling.

Yes. Pure PT can be manufactured using ISCC+ certified non-traditional fossil-based PE yarns, including recycled or biobased options.

Yes. Pure PT systems contain no loose infill and comply with upcoming EU bans on intentionally added microplastics in sports surfaces, where plastic infill will be banned in the coming years.

It reduces water use, material weight, and plastic waste while encouraging recycling, ideal for ESG reporting. Independent LCA analyses are available upon request, including comparisons with conventional turf systems. Without infill, there are no microplastics, less maintenance, and less wear and tear. It is significantly lighter than traditional turf, greatly lowering transportation distances and CO₂ emissions. Plus, its single-polymer structure allows full recyclability at the end of its lifecycle. Less material, less environmental impact, and less waste.

Pure PT is built for durability, even under high-frequency use. The absence of abrasive infill extends the system’s lifespan by up to 30%, while fields retain their integrity and deliver stable performance and consistent safety over time. This long-term resilience is backed by Lisport testing up to 500,000 cycles and Lisport XL testing up to 75,000 cycles confirming compliance with all key performance standards after more than a decade of simulated wear. A 12-year warranty further reflects the confidence supported by both lab data and real-world field validation.

Fiber loss is extremely low. The system has been tested for wear resistance and produces negligible microplastic compared to older turf types. We recently surpassed 500,000 LISport cycles with minimal yarn damage and degradation. Even though there is more yarn, the wear is much lower both as a percentage and in total volume. Report and details are available upon request.
